The Pope and the entire Catholic church has been taking some serious heat over letting this idiot back into the church. The Vatican has now ordered that the bishop recant his holocaust denying statements.
What's the point? Things can't be unsaid. I can publicly state that the sky is green, it doesn't mean that I believe it. I don't think that you can make a man change what's in his heart by forcing him to say something.
That being said, Bishop Williamson should be kicked out of the church AGAIN, never to be let back in.

Excommunicating him may originally have been a bit of an extreme step.
But allowing him back into the Church is a bad idea.
He was originally excommunicated for belonging to an extreme right wing sect that had broken off from the Catholic church called SSPX... http://www.sspx.ca/
But letting him back in... is definitely a bad idea.
As I understood it, he was excommunicated because he was ordained without the Church's approval.
I still regard it as an overreaction. The better response would have been to say "fuck you, you're not ordained, fuck off."
Considering what excommunication is believed to mean, that's probably the kind of thing that should be reserved for child rapists and mass murderers.
