How I blog...

Instead of my weekly "Where I blog" picture I'm posting today a how I blog picture. I was up until late last night posting a story on Ashin-Mettacara.com and I only slept a few hours before getting up and being on the go all day.

I looked at the news, I read my papers and still nothing came to me... I didn't know what to write about. There was either too many things to say or not enough. Sure I could complain about the separatists again, or about the Conservatives, I could talk about Obama's plan to pull out of Iraq or the economic meltdown, I could talk about a million things but still, nothing came to me.

Instead, I thought, why don't I make my self a pot of coffee, wake up a little bit and see what comes to mind. The first thing (actually the only thing) that came to mind was: take a picture of your old, dirty coffee machine. After all why not? I owe so much to this magical beverage and this little machine, most of my decent blog posts were written at 5:30am with a cup of coffee, or late at night when the only thing keeping me awake was the coffee, most of my friendships spawned around a cup of coffee, studying for exams or doing work from home is usually done with a cup of coffee in hand.

So here it is coffee, my tribute to you little battered coffee makers... you have been my faithful companion for many years. Sure, I have a 200$ espresso maker and nice stainless steel cups, but nothing can ever replace you, my old and dirty machine.

We've been through a lot of sleepless nights and exhausted mornings together... Here's to many more!

Where I blog... part 2

So for this week's installment of where I blog, I took a picture of where I sat writing yesterday's post. I was on the bus, or as my Cuban friends would call it the guagua (i just love that word), on my way back from downtown Montreal.

And it got me thinking, it doesn't really matter where I blog from as long as I'm doing it.

I live in a predominantly separatist neighborhood, so it's fair to say that most of the people on my bus were also separatists. Looking at all their faces and the way they look down everytime someone speaks something other than French inspired me to write yesterday's post. Damn the plains of Abraham.

Where I blog

In an attempt to bring some levity to my blog that seems to forever be filled with horrible stories about razor blade abortions, nazi-bishops, repressive regimes and unjust trials; I decided to implement a (maybe)weekly feature that I will call "Where I blog". In this new weekly section I'll take a picture of where I'm currently blogging from. I'll try to blog from as many places as possible throughout the city and post about these places.

Every place has a different vibe, gives you a different perspective on the world around you... it's interesting to see how blogging from my basement differs from blogging (as pictured above) sitting on my jacket with my laptop plugged into the wall of one of Montreal's institutions of higher learning.

Seeing these fresh face students walking around their eyes full of hope and belief that they can change the world is refreshing. When you're 18 and life hasn't yet kicked you in the balls it must be pretty amazing to think that the world is your oyster. I don't remember that feeling, but I'm sure it was great...

In some ways I still believe the world is mine for the taking though, that's why I blog, it's why I travel, it's why I love to discuss and learn. I've been fortunate enough to have people in my life that have taught me more than I could ever learn in a university, I've had drinks with people that have explained macro-economics to me better than any of my teachers ever did, I've shared meals with homeless people that have spoken to me about the beauty of an F sharp in a symphony composed in a minor scale, I've been lucky enough to read books and blogs that have made me laugh and cry and fume with rage, made fireworks go off in head and awakened something inside me that no philosophy or ethics class ever could have.

So no matter where you write from, your apartment, an internet cafe, a pub, a subway station, the floor of a college; Where you are from, the US, the UK, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cuba, Iran, Africa; keep doing whatever it is your doing because it is making a difference in someone's life, somewhere, somehow.
